SAWA Music Group

Last year, AEI’s Youth Media House began a musical band training with 10 Palestinian members chosen for their experience in playing a range of instruments. The 10-member team, Moslem and Christian and half male-half female, are from Bethlehem and the surrounding villages and camps. The group includes a female teenager from Germany, a volunteer at AEI.

The music trainers and the group chose the music instruments according to the members’ skills: drums, guitar, clarinet, saxophone, organ, and melodica.

Public performance

During the weekly training sessions the band members were first individually trained on the instruments, then started playing as a group. There were some scheduling problems for the training sessions due to school and other social commitments of the members. The sessions were given intensively during school holidays and AEI’s summer workshops.

After research was done about heritage music and various national and religious songs in Palestine, the band chose a range of music items for its repertoire. Performances took place during different occasions, such as the summer workshops, public events and AEI’s fieldtrips. The performances are scheduled to continue to take place at other public meetings to come in 2017.

The audiences, both young and adult, appreciate the efforts of the youngsters and their skills as beginners. With more training sessions, support and encouragement, the band members expect to become more experienced.
