The AEI-Pax Christi project, “Strengthening Civic Peace Initiatives through Integral Ecology,” has made great steps in 2024, blending ecological awareness with cultural heritage and community sumud. Through three main tracks – Improving Ecological Project Preparation and Management, Youth Advocacy campaigns, and Cultural Tourism—the initiative has empowered local communities to work together for a better future.
Ecological Project Preparation and Management
In Bethlehem, 20 women took part in training workshops, learning about ecology from both Islamic and Christian perspectives. These sessions, led by community leaders like Sheikh Abdel Majid Amarna and Mr. Fuad Giacaman, helped participants develop skills in project planning and evaluation. Inspired by successful community examples, they are now ready to start their own environmental initiatives.
Youth Advocacy Campaigns
Students from local schools launched campaigns to tackle important environmental issues, like waste burning in Beit Sahour and stray dogs in Bethlehem. Through training, media production, and community outreach, they raised awareness and worked with local leaders to find solutions. Their final events showcased their hard work and earned support from the community.
Cultural Tourism Development
New visitor pathways were created to highlight the ecological and cultural heritage around Rachel’s Tomb. Field trips and storytelling sessions helped participants connect with their local history while promoting environmental awareness. The program also offered English language lessons that combined cultural tourism and ecology, deepening participants’ pride in their heritage.
Despite challenges like security risks and economic struggles, this project has shown the power of communities working together for positive change. It has inspired hope, strengthened sumud, and brought people closer to their land, history, and each other.
